Nominations Sought for Salute to Family Awards
Family Service of Central Indiana, Inc. is accepting nominations for the annual Alice M. Ross "Salute to Family" Award that recognizes exemplary families from the community.

The annual award honors families who have made a difference, whether it be at home in their care for their own family or by bettering their community.

Any member of the community may nominate a family they admire, and families may nominate themselves. Families must live in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion or Morgan County to be eligible.

Nominated families can include: two-parent and single-parent families, stepfamilies, multigenerational, blended, traditional, non-traditional, foster or adoptive.

Nominations must be submitted online, faxed or postmarked by Feb. 28, 2009. Read more...

Save the Date - "Salute to Family" Awards Breakfast - April 22
Winners will receive their honors at the "Salute to Family" Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Riverwalk - 6729 E. Westfield Blvd; Indianapolis, IN 46220. The event will begin at 8 a.m.

Family Service Awarded $86,000 as part of Indianapolis Crime Prevention Grant
Mayor Greg Ballard recently announced recommendations for recipients of approximately $4.5 million in the city's inaugural round of Community Crime Prevention Grants. Breaking Free and Alternatives to Domestic Violence programs of Family Service of Central Indiana were awarded $86,000 of these funds. These funds will be used to enhance mentoring and education programs offered by Family Service. Fifty community initiatives were selected from the pool of 127 proposals.

Volunteer Spotlight

In her role as Pet Support Volunteer, Amanda Messenger aids older and challenged adults in caring for their beloved pets so that they may remain in the home and continue to bring comfort and happiness to their owners. She is also on standby for the staff to consult with their various pet-related questions. Amanda has done everything from diagnose and help treat a cat who had fleas to bring her own dog, Ruby, to visit a lonely older client. "I immensely enjoy interacting with each client (human and animal)," Amanda explains, "I cherish the opportunity to care for and think about someone other than myself, to me that's the best reward."
