STAND UP FOR FAMILIES FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS
In spite of a struggling economy, the generosity of Family Service supporters, board members and staff was not lacking at the 15th annual Stand Up for families fundraiser Nov. 15.
Hosted at the Fountains in Carmel, the event raised approximately $95,000 via items sold at both a silent and live auction, individual donations, and through corporate sponsorships.
"We are very pleased with the total we raised," said Edie Olson, President of Family Service. "With the state of the current economy and with several not-for-profits feeling the pinch, we certainly consider this year's event a success." This year's event, which included more than 300 attendees, offered a buffet dinner, live music, and stand-up comedy by Bob & Tom Comedy All-Stars Dave Dugan and Patti Vasquez. Read more...

Loans to Struggling Families Despite Tough Economy
While the credit crisis has made it more difficult for families to borrow funds, Ways to Work, Inc. announced that the Milwaukee-based affordable loan and financial education organization has secured more than $16 million in new financing to drive its expansion, more than double the size of its program network, and enable it to serve thousands of additional working families. The new funding from foundations, financial institutions and government agencies, will allow Ways to Work to begin to meet its goal of expanding from 40 program offices in 20 states to 110 offices across the country by 2013. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Help children break free from domestic violence:
Breaking Free is a program that works with mothers and children who are looking for assistance in breaking the cycle of domestic violence and moving forward with their lives. The Breaking Free Children's Program works to help these vulnerable children cope with their experiences. Using a pre-approved curriculum and under the guidance of Family Service staff, volunteers lead group discussions with children of various ages about what domestic violence is and how to cope with it in their lives. The group meets for three hours, one night per week for ten weeks at a confidential location. Training is provided.
