MEDIA ALERT Community Forum to Address Increasing Need for Services to Protect Older and Disabled Adults in Indianapolis WHAT: Family Service of Central Indiana will present a National Family Week community forum about the issues of protecting and making decisions on behalf of incapacitated persons, and the need for an organized, systematic response to this growing community need. Topics will include determining when a loved one is no longer able to make sound decisions, protecting their interests while keeping them involved as possible in decisions, and ethical considerations when making health care decisions on behalf of an incapacitated adult. WHO: Forum features a panel of experts who will discuss: Evaluating Decision-Making Capacity Daniel F. Rexroth, Psy.D. Assistant Clinical Professor Indiana University School of Medicine Legal Protection of Vulnerable Adults Dennis Frick, Project Director and Attorney at Law Senior Law Project Indiana Legal Services, Inc. Substitute Decision-Making in Health Care Dr. Alexia Torke, M.D. Associate Fellowship Director Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics Indiana University School of Medicine The audience for this forum will include families/caregivers of older adults, persons with disabilities or life-threatening illnesses and professionals who work with these populations. WHERE: Indianapolis Senior Center Tuesday, Nov. 25 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Indianapolis Senior Center 708 E. Michigan St. Indianapolis, IN WHY: Unlike many other states, Indiana has no publicly funded court-appointed guardianship program. Family Service is one of only two organizations in Indianapolis that will consider taking guardianship of incapacitated persons, and the demand for such services vastly exceeds our capacity to respond.
