Strong families don't just happen - they require hard work and commitment on the part of each member.  The following tips can help you build and maintain strong and healthy family relationships.

Open the lines of communication.

  • Communicate by your actions as well as your words.  A well-timed hug or touch can mean more than a thousand words.
  • Be aware of your tone of voice and body language.  A friendly, warm tone combined with an open, relaxed style makes other feel safe and  comfortable in your presence.
  • Be a good listener.  Avoid filtering your child's or partner's words to fit your expectations or opinions.
  • Show that you understand the other person's point of view even if you don't agree.

Develop a good parent-child relationship.

  • Set fair family rules and enforce them consistently.  Make sure your child understands the consequences for breaking the rules.
  • Parenting is a tough job.  Be patient, considerate and maintain a sense of humor.
  • Praise your child when he/she makes a good decision.
  • Set aside time to have fun with your child.

Keep that relationship spark alive.

  • Share child care responsibilities and household chores with your partner.
  • Set family goals and priorities and work on them together.
  • Set aside quiet time each day during which the two of you can talk about what's important in your life.
  • Remember that your family started with and is sustained by the two of you.  Value and nurture your relationship.

Work through crises and conflicts.

  • When crises arise, attack the problem, not family members.
  • Understand and acknowledge what the conflict is about.  Don't confuse things by becoming angry over one issue while arguing about another.
  • Don't hold a grudge.  Communicate your feelings openly and honestly, then move on.
  • Acknowledge your mistakes and be willing to say "I'm sorry."
  • Don't hide your disagreements with your partner from your children.  Model how to resolve problems openly.
